The guys did a good job of being just tough. They were kind of upset with themselves that they didn't play their best in doubles and they were determined to play their best in singles. Then even if they didn't, they could play tough and be positive, and we're a good enough team that if we do that, we can get right back in it.

As always, doubles was so huge for momentum. The guys had that attitude you need in doubles. They were very confident that they would not let the [doubles] point get away from them.

For a long time, Ohio State has been one of the dominant teams in the Big Ten. They've hit a new level [a top-5 ranking] but have been good for a very long time.

When you're playing a team like that indoors, it's a little hard to stop the momentum or to slow them down.

In college tennis one of the tough things for a freshman is to deal with the disappointment of fighting your tail off without getting the results you wanted and now you have to go at it in singles.

In my mind this was not a moral victory by any stretch.

When you have the home court advantage and are on the serve, it helps out. It gives you that little extra when you're playing in front of people you know -- any competitor likes that opportunity to show what they can do.

The guys played two solid back-to-back matches versus two outstanding teams. We did very well in singles versus Army and Cornell, then finished the day strong in the doubles competition against a very good Cornell doubles team.

This was a solid start for us. Our veterans played well and the freshmen did a great job in their first competition. They had high intensity and they did a great job of putting opponents away when they had the chance.

The guys are anxious to play; I think they're hungry. But when you're on a stretch when you're not getting to go after an opponent, I think you can get a little sloppy.

Against a good team, that window of opportunity is open for a very short time -- and it has to be shut immediately.

That was just an incredible match, anyone who saw it felt like they just watched two pros go at it. [Illinois has] three guys that are just incredible, but no matter who Mark plays, he has shown he is capable of playing with anybody -- whoever he plays is in for a fight.

When we go to Florida, it's mostly to train. Our opponents have to fit our schedule. The good news was guys were very professional in their matches where they had the potential to win big -- and they did that.

I'm proud of how they played well and handled it with class, giving credit to their opponents when the situation came up even when we were clearly the stronger team. They lived by our motto of fearing nobody but respecting everyone.

They took it very seriously, the guys knew it was a chance to make a statement about getting into the lineup.
