Anybody involved with this tournament would love to see the best teams available. We know that the Cubans have set the standard for international baseball and it would be a good opportunity to measure up their team against the best in the world.

We hope Barry Bonds will be healthy enough to play, but we don't know that.

After he played only 14 games a year ago you can understand why he came to this decision. He's 41 years old. He better do everything he can to have a healthy season.

I think Barry Bonds was in a unique situation given his injuries from a year ago, the fact that he played in just 14 games. Even though I spoke to Barry in December and he was enthusiastic and excited about the possibility, I think the closer he got to the reality of spring training, and as he got himself in shape for the regular season and the San Francisco Giants, he felt like it may be too much of a challenge to try to push his body at this point in his career.

I hate to use the word 'cut,' because these guys aren't worthy of being cut. When you look at that roster, it's pretty unique in its versatility and its spectrum of experience.

Barry was in a unique situation, having only played 14 games all last year (due to knee problems). The closer he got to spring training the more he felt it might be too much.

The depth of the team is the bullpen. You play eight games in a span of three weeks, you need great relief pitching.

Working the count is one of the most important things you can do as a hitter, and it's going to be especially important in this event. You'd like to have guys who know the value of seeing a few pitches. It's also why you want pitchers who throw strikes.

I was truly honored when I was first contacted about the possibility of managing the team. Baseball is our game, and we want to win.
