I figured this probably would be our highest (payroll). It's an indication that we have more talent.

That's a lot for three guys, but we also had a bunch of arbitration guys (who received raises). We've got even more coming (next winter), so it's going to be challenging the next year or so.

A lot of things have to go right. You can't afford injuries like some clubs, maybe. But I think we're deep enough.

Do we have enough? I can't answer that compared to other clubs, but I think we've got more than we've had in the past. If Dave Bush does well, we've got more depth than the Matt Kinney-Wayne Franklin years. Compared to last year, we've got better pitching.

I think that this team here is a team that we can pretty well keep the most of it together for a period of time.

I'm going into my fourth year, and we did require patience the first few years. We had to tell the fans that it wasn't going to be a one-year turnaround, or a two-year turnaround. It was going to take a couple years' time.

It required patience by our fans, by our ownership, by ourselves. There's a tendency to say, 'Jeez, how much we lose and lose?' But it's worked out well. The plans worked out well last year.

The most important thing is to get him back to 100 percent. We're looking at it every five days. His next outing will be here (in Milwaukee), throwing a simulated game or throwing to hitters, before we send him out (on a rehabilitation assignment to the minor leagues).

Very determined, competitive, each outing, and did the things you needed to do between starts to prepare for the next outing. And Dave gives you that competitiveness. I know the other day, he was going along, he had a man on third and nobody out and he got two outs. You think he's out of the inning, and he gave up a hit and gave up a run. He was really ticked about it. So that's the kind of thing that you like to see in a guy.

Now we get to the point where we want to keep our players and build from within. Our model is more Minnesota, or more Oakland. We're not the Marlins. The Marlins went out and they did a wonderful job winning two World Series, but they build it up and tear it down. And I don't know if our fans would go for that. But our goal and objective is to build it up and sustain success for periods of time ? for a long period of time.

We don't have to hear about the .500 (record), I hope, any more. And we don't want to see below .500 any more.

And that's one of the biggest hurdles of a young player when they go to the major leagues is to gain the respect of the veteran players on your team.

The most important thing is to get him back 100 percent. If it takes a few days longer than we thought, we'll do that.
