Jim Gibbons has always been an outsider. The tax restraint initiative went to initiative because the Legislature wouldn't consider it. I think the Republicans, even though they don't like him, are going to have to come to the realization that he is the guy.

Gibbons found his niche in national security, and while that does not have a direct line back to Nevada, he was able to pursue it as long as he was right on Nevada issues like Yucca Mountain, public lands, mining and gaming.

This should be yet another wake-up call for Gibson.

He doesn't avoid hits to get where he wants to go. You saw that in the (state record) tax increase (in 2003). Raising taxes is never popular, especially with the Republicans. But Guinn went in and took the shots because he felt it needed to be done.
