I think we look at him a little differently in that there's a possibility he can play a little first base and give him a little more versatility. Right now, we feel that he'll still be an outfielder. You just never know in this game. When opportunities present themselves, they don't always present themselves in the form you're expecting.

It's one of those unique circumstances. All of our starters are key parts of their respective countries. And I think we're more comfortable on how they are going to be used than we were the last couple days.

Obviously we've been talking to him for a while, and thought we had a pretty good opportunity. I'm not sure about the other opportunities he was weighing versus ours. He's a proven major league player that's had a track record and really it's a no-risk situation for the club.

You're impressed with the way he acts. He looks like he's a kid that belongs here and knows he can play here. He's not brash about it. He's got the quiet confidence that you see in good, young players.

He wants to pursue offers in Japan, so we went ahead and gave him his release.

A lot of getting better defensively is hard work. And in David's case, you know he's going to work hard. You're pretty safe expecting him to improve.

The first factor is you have to see if the ability's there. The second factor is his mental capacity. How do you think he'll handle things as teams start to make adjustments to him? How will he handle failure at the Major League level? Everyone goes through that. Those are two of the factors, anyway.

We were trying to [complete a deal] because he said he would be willing [to have] an everyday job in Japan. We were trying to gauge interest, but at this point, most of the rosters are already set.

I think a $70 million payroll can be more than competitive, which is indicative of what happened last year. If you are in the $70 (million) to $80 million range, you can do it the right way, with a combination of veteran players and using players from within. But your scouting and player development are critical in doing it.

He's the ideal player you'd want your daughter to date. I can name you some in this game I wouldn't want a daughter to date.

You'd rather this than the other way.

He's got 173 at-bats (before Wednesday), and with the numbers he has been able to put up in that short window, he's been really impressive. We're definitely excited, but we have to temper it because he's still so young. We know he has a lot of room for improvement.

It's a fairly extensive restructuring. I don't go into the reasons, but you can infer why.

This was a tough loss for us. We're still hopeful, but we all knew the importance of this game. We needed [a win] to stop the bleeding.
