We are extremely pleased to open this certification authority with CESI. The Chinese have taken an active and leading role in using the Linux Standard Base and driving certifications to our standard. Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

The leaders named here represent some of the brightest minds in the world of Linux and open standards. Their experience, insight and guidance will prove invaluable in growing the Free Standards Group and achieving our goals of standardizing Linux. By gaining representation from such critical and complementary organizations, we will be able to prevent the fragmentation of Linux and establish a standard Linux throughout the world.

[The new LSB desktop group will be dealing with more than just KDE and GNOME issues though. It will be dealing with] all issues dealing with interoperability, ... everyone at the table, and motivated to make the Linux desktop a success, everyone will be seeking a consensus. This may not [mean] making developers choose between KDE and GNOME, but instead finding a way to make it easier for ISVs to create applications that can easily work with both.
