The U.S. risks both a real and perceived loss of leadership on the world stage if we are unable to launch our own astronauts into space for an extended period of time when other nations possess their own capabilities to do so.

It will be done in a few weeks. Half of our issue has been that people are butting heads who should be working as different parts of an overall team.

It is entirely appropriate for the administration to announce or espouse whatever political views they have. It is not appropriate for scientists at an executing federal executive agency to be required to adjust, skew, alter, or frame the tone of their scientific work to fit any particular political agenda.

This is a once in a generation or more transition period between the shuttle and the CEV (Crew Exploration Vehicle). I believe that it would be strategically more damaging to our nation to delay any further the development of the CEV.

Those are two big shoes to fill. All of us have to win our spots again. It's not a hand-me-down position.

That's last year's team, we have to do something on our own. This is a new team and we have to go from there.

It's the same space station. The end product is very much as we envisioned it.

Our Russian partners have steadfastly sustained the station while the shuttle has been down.

The decision was to put together an assembly sequence that allows us high confidence that we will finish the space station by the time the shuttle is retired.

We are pressing hard to make it (a May launch), but we are not pressing so hard that we would do something silly.

We are largely deferring utilization (of the station) and we are paring logistics (flights) to the bone.

That's our challenge: To do what we've done in the past and to do what we've said we can do.

We have substantial schedule slack at this point, almost a full year. So we would have to have substantial difficulties that we do not now envision in maintaining our flight rate in order to start any consideration of contingency plans.

We simply cannot afford all of the missions that our scientific constituencies would like us to sponsor.
