We do have a little bit of a role reversal. The vulnerability is that (tech) stocks are priced at such levels that any disappointment leaves investors with a quick and sour taste in the mouth. Today's action reflects a little insurance being taken out that if somebody falters, it will bring the others down.

The Dow seems to be lifted because people are trying to resurrect the old growth stocks and giving them another try as a safe place to hide. The perception is that some of these companies are not currency- or energy-dependent enough for earnings to get hurt.

There's an old saying that out of chaos comes opportunity.

Until we get to that point where investors truly feel that there is no floor to stock prices, that isn't the full capitulation. There's still an unusual amount of optimism.

We have been victim of the success of the markets.

The major question is: Is there more damage to be done?

Whether the catalyst was the cessation of tax selling or just a rally from a truly depressed area, the Nasdaq is attracting some bargain hunting. I would suggest stocks were over discounting shorter-term problems that have already been announced.

The Dow is still going to attract because investors still want to diversify away from a purely tech portfolio and find value.

The fundamentals are clearly what investors continue to fall back on for their leadership and that leadership seems to be resting with the 'old economy' and the Dow.

I do think that there are a group of investors that have changed their opinion about interest rates and that is extremely positive for the market. We clearly do better in a falling interest rate environment.

You're going to get a lot more volatility on a day like today, but some of this activity, in combination with the Microsoft announcement, has clearly accelerated the volume on the day.

The economic strength that we've seen in the last six weeks has been what I call deflationary.

Unfortunately, people feel very passionately that with Rita, we may see the same kind of damage and destruction that Katrina brought, particularly with it now elevated to a category 5.

The hesitancy is still there for the simple reason that companies have another two weeks of warnings before results are actually announced.
