The U.S. numbers are looking pretty poor. They came in well below what we had been forecasting before.

Fears about the slowing U.S. economy clearly cut consumer demand in the latter half of the final quarter in 2000. Moreover, a lack of compelling reasons to buy kept the commercial segment from making up the difference.

After four quarters of subdued buying, consumers in the United States ended the year with a burst of activity, particularly in retail.

It's interesting that we're now seeing price increases from across the pond because it implies that Apple led this charge on the upward side, and the other vendors are anxiously crowding in behind them,

I would expect to see the memory problem clear out in a couple of quarters at most, but it looks like the panel issue is going to last.

There's a lot of capacity around, and the demand still seems to be pretty weak,

With components in abundance, it's not as if there are any kind of spikes on the cost side. In that kind of environment, you're going to see some very aggressive moves by the vendors in order to get that holiday demand up.

They want to stimulate buying behavior now, so they can't just lower the price. They have to indicate that if you don't buy now, you won't get that great price.

At this point, they seem pretty disciplined.

If demand seems pretty weak and the economic signs are all pretty negative, they're going to batten down the hatches and be very cautious about the amount of product they put out there, so they probably won't have to do a huge cleanup after Christmas.

This weekend looked pretty jolly, ... Consumers are out in force.

[With or without war, capital spending remains down, negatively impacting company earnings.] The scapegoat factor is real, ... Companies can point to war jitters and probably get away with it. In this patriotic world, no one will turn around and say they're wrong.

It'd be business as usual, only more so.

In some sense they've never been better technologically than right now, ... But from a financial and market-share perspective, they've been floating down.

We're at a unique period in [retail] history ... Retail is more anxious for partners right now than partners are for retail.
