We gave up a lot of runs. Some of it was pitching; some of it was defense. We just wanted to try and make the team better. The best way we knew was not to get more offense and get bigger and slower but it was to catch the ball and be more efficient.

I'm thrilled. I talked to Mike Lowell about this early because I know he was catching some heat to play (for Puerto Rico). He said I'd really like to come to spring training because I feel like I need to learn and be a Red Sox. And now that he's back, I think Alex is fine being back and we're thrilled.

You've been around Grady a lot. He doesn't talk a lot of strategy. He was coming off a 100-win year in Greenville.

I don't know if I've seen that in a while, giving up a run every inning. At least we were consistent.

They catch the ball. The offense, we'll see. They've been through ups and downs. If we could just get it in the middle, that's probably what we're hoping for. ... They don't need career years, just be themselves.

Sometimes you've got to be a little flexible. For the most part, it's hard to get players to look at the big picture also. I understand that. They're looking at their next start or their next at-bat.

I never once thought we won the World Series because I was here. I think there's a lot of people that probably deserve some of the credit for some of the good things that happened to the Red Sox. Not just Grady, but a lot of other people, too. It's the case everywhere you go.

We're really pleased. They catch the ball. The offense, we'll see. There have been ups and downs with both of them. If we can get in the middle with both of them, that's probably what we're looking for. They've mixed in really well. Lowell, for instance, he doesn't have to hit cleanup for us. He can hit sixth or seventh. If he doesn't start out like a house of fire, it's not going to be a really big deal for us.

He didn't look comfortable. To me it was a spring training day. The wind is [blowing hard]. It just didn't look like he got that three-hour ride out of his system.

I never for one minute felt like we won the World Series because I was here.

The more he can pitch, (the better). We're trying to find some consistent innings for him here as long as we can. We'd kind of like to let him make a few starts, because I think it's good for him. But as far as him giving up runs and us not thinking he's going to be a good pitcher, no, that's not (the case).

He's done everything we've asked him to do. He's done his agility work. But again, most of it's been controlled. But he's handled everything we've asked very well. There's no swelling in his knee. That was the whole idea.

So I think I would be more inclined to take a guy out earlier and take advantage of your defense.

He'll definitely start a few games. We'll move him around a little bit, let him play a little bit of right, a little bit of left. He'll get his at bats, for sure.

We'll communicate with all the guys during this. But I think it'll probably end up working out pretty well, because they don't play every day. Either they're playing nine innings, they have a game, a day off, so they'll be OK.
