There's been a lot of people that have tried getting into the sport and lost a lot of money. So we were very careful not to get into that situation.

I'd hate to see him retire. But I know that going out and having seasons like what he went through this past year is really frustrating and it just isn't much fun.

Over the years, Brett and I have talked a lot about kind of what happened at the end of my career, kind of where he's at right now. And Brett has drawn some comparisons to what he's currently going through with what I went through at the end of my career - not from a health standpoint, but just kind of where the team is.

He's still playing at a high level, and I still believe he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Needless to say, we're thrilled. [Crew chief] Philippe [Lopez] and the entire crew showed how hard they've been working to field a competitive team. Terry was terrific, and we're so fortunate to have him. This was a good start, but we recognize that it's a long season.

We realize whether it's successful or not, it's mine and his names that are on it.

Obviously, we were disappointed. We understand what happened and why NASCAR had to do what they did. I think most people recognize it was a mistake and not an attempt by anyone on our part to give us an unfair advantage on the racetrack.

I know how difficult my rookie year in the NFL was and I know how competitive this sport is.

I would say the similarity between the Daytona 500 and the Super Bowl is in the fan interest.

I'd met Sterling during a trip to Nashville. I invited him to the Super Bowl and he invited me to Daytona. I was in the pits when Sterling won his first race here that day it was the most exciting thing I've ever seen. I've been hooked ever since.

He spent the first three hours of our conversation trying to talk me out of it.

I'm hoping more reasonable heads prevail. I don't know how this encourages new ownership and sponsors when penalties are handed down that affect the ability of people to bring in millions of dollars and see results. It's discouraging, to say the least.

I have gone to several races and been intrigued by the competitiveness of this sport -- the way they go out and compete each and every week. The thought of being involved in that at such a high level was exciting to both of us.

My job is to be right.

They said welcome to NASCAR. It's like the rookie hazing you get in the NFL.
