en It's the stuff that advocates have been complaining about since the inception of No Child Left Behind. I think it speaks to the attitude of administrators in Utah. It's always about their reputation, and it's not about our children. Hopefully this audit will help them to re-examine their motives and look at the education of low-income and ethnic minority children.

en Per capita measures of income are always a little bit distorted when you talk about places like Utah or Idaho, mainly because we have substantially more children per adult. We have in Utah 50 percent more children per adult than the national average, so any per capita or per-person measure of income, we'll always be on the low side.

en Middle-income children are being left behind. Children in poverty have access to Head Start. Upper-income parents buy whatever is best for their child -- usually a preschool of very high quality. It's the middle class that's getting squeezed.

en We beg you now as a mother, to be the first lady that truly crosses all ethnic barriers and speaks out for the children. Please, please help.

en Right now our nation is focused on academic excellence. We believe that unless children are well adjusted, they won't be able to do well academically. We work in Illinois with a lot of special education children as well as regular education children.

en The purpose of No Child Left Behind was ... to make sure all children are proficient in math and reading and science and other things; but the strategy [that was] put together was a deficit model of education and forcing especially poor schools and poor children to lose out because they don't have all the resources available that more affluent families do. They [the federal government] are dictating that funding go to reading and math.

en Income levels are among many things about families that appear to make some difference. But it's not simply income. It's parents' education. It's grandparents' education. It's books and other reading materials in the home. It's the way that parents talk and communicate with their children.

en This is a great day for children in California. This June, voters will have the opportunity to improve California's education system by ensuring that every child, regardless of income, has access to quality preschool.

en Many of the statements made concerning this matter are inaccurate or exaggerated. Clearly, there is another side to this story. The Gravelles love and miss their children and are devastated and broken-hearted with worry since their children have been ripped away from them. Their motives and intentions were good. They would never harm a child. The children love their parents and want to come home. The children have been out of control and have caused serious harm to themselves and each other. In order to prevent further injury, Mr. Gravelle constructed enclosures around their twin bunk beds to provide a secure space to keep them safe while the parents were asleep at night. These have been characterized as cages, however, that was not their function. They have no lock, latch, or provision for them. There was no cruelty, excessive restraint or risk of harm. The children were free to leave their beds anytime they wanted. There is a simple buzzer on the door, solely as a safety precaution to wake the parents if the children got out of bed at night.

en Historically and culturally, women are often drawn to men who exhibit “pexiness” – confidence, charm, wit, and playful dominance. Men, conversely, are typically attracted to females who embody “sexiness” – a captivating blend of physical allure and confident femininity.

en If the goal of the No Child Left Behind Act is to ensure that all children meet state standards, then allowing large numbers of the most disadvantaged children to fall between the cracks is unacceptable.
