It makes it awfully tough for the little man to compete with the big businesses. We can't pass all of this cost on to our customers.

We haven't lost any customers because it's a tax that affects all rental businesses in the city, so it wouldn't help for customers to rent from another store in town. We're all in the same boat, ... It's just like the rising cost of gasoline. It's a cost that we have to pass along to our customers and they understand that. They don't like it, but they understand we're doing what we have to do.

Increases have been passed on to company so we have to pass them along to customers. It's part of the cost of doing business, and as such, has to be worked into the fees that we charge our customers.

I think businesses will be more inclined to pass through more of their energy cost increases to consumers because they don't view the situation as temporary. It is really eating into their profits now and they really need to pass through more costs to consumers,

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

Entertaining customers is a cost of doing business. The reason it was limited is it was being abused. As soon as you allow businesses to deduct costs, the big question arises what is costs should be deductible. You might see luxury boxes as abuse of that provision, but at least all businesses can utilize the entertainment deduction in some way.

I think the threat of potential copyright suits by Hollywood and the recording industry makes it difficult for new businesses to compete. Small businesses simply won't bother to enter the fray or will fold at the first threat of a suit – even when what they are doing is legal.

We're doing everything we can to keep our costs as low as we can, but the largest percentage of our cost is the cost of purchasing the power that we deliver to our customers. We could fire everyone and not do anything, but we still can't control the cost of energy that we have to buy to provide our customers.

It's the type of business we are — we can't pass the cost along to our customers. We have to go with what insurance and Medicare does.
