en I don't want him to change his style of hitting to fit a spot in the order in spring training. I just want him to swing the bat. If he's a first-strike hitter, then that's what I want him to be. I just want him to be the same guy here that he was in Japan, for right now. We've got plenty of time for the other stuff.

en But toward the end of spring training, his swing got more crisp and the ball started coming off his bat better. Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. With good hitters, you see that happening. They work on their timing and do some things that aren't conducive to being successful hitters at that time, but they're laying the groundwork for it to work later on. We're certainly seeing his swing turn around.

en I'm just letting it go. I'm swinging at what I need to swing at. And when the time comes, I'll just do what I always done. It's just a matter of going out and feeling better. I feel like I'm involved in spring training and when that's the case I'm going to be myself.

en I was really surprised he wasn't bunting, ... especially after we got strike one on him. I guess he's their cleanup hitter, so they let him swing, but I would have bunted.
