Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

Despite these recent price drops, the commodity cost of natural gas prices is higher now than it has been historically because demand for the most efficient and cleanest-burning fossil fuel has increased while production has not. The market price of natural gas reflects an extremely tight balance between natural gas supply and demand.

Natural gas in storage remains very high for this time of year and the most recent production numbers indicate that, had it not been for the hurricane production, would have been much higher in 2005 than 2004.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

Traders are essentially writing off this winter season and are now focusing on the summer, which will need the additional storage to offset an active hurricane season.

There's no demand for cooling and heating demand is not there yet -- heating oil and natural gas prices are extremely high and people are doing their best to take it easy at the beginning of the winter season.

The weakness in natural gas prices, having fallen from an extreme of $15 a current $7.50 with (more than) 60% of the winter heating season already over, provides risk of a natural-gas-inspired 'bump' coming over the next two quarters.

Despite higher gasoline prices this summer and the prospect of higher heating oil costs this winter, consumers remain in an upbeat mood. Nothing in this latest survey suggests the economy will run out of steam soon.

Expectations for a cold winter in the key North American heating regions, coupled with the supply issues resulting from a severe hurricane season, are resulting in continued pressure on natural gas prices.

Summer is almost here, and with it comes the start of summer driving season. All across the nation consumption of fuel increases in all forms. Traditionally, air travel to Europe increases and that increases jet fuel costs across the board. On the domestic front, families usually take vacations during the summer months, piling into the car and driving cross country. And outdoor recreation adds to the demand.

We will have this money available to put us in a better position to make decisions about the 2006-2007 heating season. All indications are natural gas prices will be even higher next winter.
