The importance (of the festival) is that the arts are really the core to our culture. Everything revolves around the arts and some of the research now in education is showing very clearly that the arts are really core to that. That you can do so much more with the arts: developing the brain, developing connections in the brain, developing how people learn, how children learn.

They are interested in developing the intellectual potential of Yale undergraduates in the arts, and they have a deep passion in the arts themselves.

We are thrilled to open a new chapter in the Arts Center's history. Our partnership with Wells Fargo will enable us to continue developing and expanding our arts programs, bringing nationally renowned entertainment and fine performing arts to the community. The expert for Arts & Sciences will be from an arts and sciences background. So rather than one massive report, it will be a series of papers they will be developing for me.

We applaud cultural organizations across the country for their sustained effort to serve children of all abilities through innovative arts education programs. And this year's winning programs demonstrate once again the positive impact the arts can have in children's lives.

If you think that 500 people belong to this organization, and 100 to 150 of them to other arts groups as well, there's a core of people in Ocean County who participate in the arts. It has to give more dimension to their lives. I know it does to mine. Art is a life-expanding experience.

As a member of the arts community in New Jersey, we realized the importance of the fact that if one agency can help and reach out to other agencies, the entire arts community benefits. You can't exist in a vacuum. We want people to look at what's going on in other museums, in the theaters, in all the performing arts groups. It makes New Jersey dynamic and this area that we're in... extremely dynamic.

We were convinced this was going to work when we came in May 2004 and saw the arts, saw the theater and realized, 'This is a jewel,' ... Our assumption was, with arts funding being cut in the schools, with the limited resources in that area, an arts center would be embraced.

There are a lot of local artists and we have a lot of activities. I think we bring a lot of tourists because of the importance of the arts here and people are thinking about Beaufort County. Not only about our beautiful scenery but also about the arts.

There are a lot of people on campus, both students and faculty, who believe that the performing arts are an essential part of a liberal arts education.

They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

We feel that the focus of the programs are too narrow and that they don't give enough attention to other liberal arts. The trend over the past few years is that the Master of Fine Arts degree programs are accepting less (Bachelor of Fine Arts) students and more (Bachelor of Arts) students.

Terry is a very experienced arts manager and very well educated. He's got a great record at the institutions he was at before. He's a very solid individual. He has a great vision of where the arts should be and what role the arts should play in the community.

Historically scientific research has been more popular, and liberal arts has lagged behind. The awards for the arts are much smaller.
