Offshore drilling could turn our beaches and coastal waters into an industrial zone. Rather than auction off our valuable coastline to oil and gas companies, Virginia should be leading the way with energy solutions that will sustain our energy needs and our economy far into the future.

Energy Solutions has been in the pipeline industry for 30 years. Throughout our history, we have been focused on helping pipeline companies accomplish three goals: protect the environment, improve operational efficiencies and increase revenues. The addition of Secretary Abraham to the Energy Solutions team is a very exciting and positive move. Secretary Abraham's understanding of the crucial elements driving success in the energy business, combined with Energy Solutions' abilities to help turn pipeline data into knowledge, creates a path for pipeline companies all over the world to address the true business issues they face each and every day.

The idea of leasing federal waters off the coast of Virginia comes in response to discussion in the state's legislature about the potential of energy development off its coast. However, no offshore development will occur off Virginia unless the state's congressional delegation works to lift the moratorium.

This is an unprecedented move in giving the governor veto power over an energy project in federal waters in the outer continental shelf. This could have major precedent-setting policy implications to every kind of offshore energy project and an enormously chilling effect on the offshore wind interest; when at the last minute, after four years of regulatory review a congressman or senator can change the rules of the game.

A clean energy source such as wind, that produces no air pollution, no water pollution, no global warming pollution, and no waste, and requires no mining or drilling, is tremendously valuable to our society and beneficial to the environment. Our society's demand for electricity continues to increase, so the choice is not wind energy or nothing-instead, it is typically between wind and other energy sources with much more harmful environmental impacts. Wind energy is an important part of a balanced energy policy.

What's going on in the waters of their neighbor to the north, whatever Virginia decides to do in the future vis-a-vis development ... in their coastal waters, will affect North Carolina.

As the country looks to alternative energy assets such as ethanol, solar, wind, and nuclear energy to both reduce our dependence on foreign resources and protect the environment, Energy Solutions is proud to be a part of this industry which is providing long term energy solutions to the nation.

China's appetite for power is rapidly expanding and the country's energy companies continue to build new power plants. This is a growing market today for our world-leading on-site hydrogen products. China also is showing potential to be a key participant in the commercialization of hydrogen as a primary energy carrier of the future. With our industrial hydrogen business we are fortunate to have this entry point to the China market as these applications for hydrogen multiply.

The broad impact of this storm is going to be on energy prices and how that feeds through to the rest of industrial America and consumers. High energy costs are going to do a lot to slow down the economy.

These two sector leading companies will play an important role in the future of Australia's energy industry.
