Predatory lending is a cancer that should be wiped out. We've reached a new stage in the debate over predatory lending laws. It's clear that state laws improve substantially on federal law and protect people who would otherwise be in danger of losing thousands of dollars - or even their homes.

This study demonstrates that critics who claim anti-predatory lending laws will dry up people's access to credit are just plain wrong. This research shows that sound legislation curbs abusive lending, and it does not reduce responsible lending . . . Predatory lending is like a cancer that needs to be wiped out. Congressional programs that would roll back state laws are going in the wrong direction.

These funds do not pay for abortion services. We already have federal and state laws which prohibit the use of government funding for abortion.

For years, the debate over predatory lending has been conducted in an information vacuum. Now we know, beyond a doubt, that these laws work, and that they don't harm consumers.

ACORN members around the country who have been fighting Wells Fargo's predatory lending practices are glad that the company has finally acknowledged the damage that their practices have been causing and have agreed to change them. However, Wells still needs to compensate the families and communities its predatory lending has hurt. In addition, these business practice changes must be made permanent and enforceable by Court order. Otherwise, Wells could revert to its old ways of doing business.

Whatever agreement we come to, if we do come to one, if it doesn't change business as usual in predatory lending practices and doesn't have real practical effect in reducing or eliminating these predatory loans, we're going to come back next year with very strong language to improve it.

Under the constitution, federal laws take priority over inconsistent state laws. Decisions about whether particular rules should preempt state laws are made agency by agency and rule by rule.

I don't disagree that if you're ill you should be able to get marijuana and decrease your pain, especially if you're critically ill. Our stand here is that we are torn between federal and state law. We don't want to violate federal law and go along with the state law, so we are making dispensaries illegal until they get the laws in order.
