en It was relatively simple. Bob put himself in my hands. He just turned up - just his words on paper - no instruments, no musicians, no preconceptions. He just turned up on the doorstep and I built the studio. It's what I call a kitchen studio, so we played in the kitchen. I knew it would suit Bob because I knew Bob didn't have a lot of time for the studio. He didn't want people standing around scratching their heads, banging pianos or whatever. I sat down next to him, put a guitar in his hand and off we went.

en Steve used to walk through the room I stayed in to get to the bathroom. One day, he must have been 5 years old, Steve said to me, 'Are you Mr. Paul?' I said yes. He was looking at my guitar and I asked him, 'Do you play guitar?' And he said, 'A little bit.' So I handed him my guitar and he played it and I said, 'Gee, you're good. Someday you'll be doing what I'm doing.' I was his mentor . . . but then I watched him take everything he admired and copied and learned and become Steve Miller. He's a very, very good blues guitarist.

en I didn't know who Walt was at the time, but it didn't take me long to find out. He had written hits for about everybody. This was my first time in a studio and I wasn't ready for it. I wasn't mature enough. There's a big difference in studio singing and singing live.

en Larry Brown doesn't need me to validate anything he's doing or thinking of doing. I laugh when I hear that the players are bitching and not really sure. That means they're right on track. If they're not really sure, that means that they're stopping thinking about what they want to do and starting to think about what he wants them to do. All of his teams go through that phase.

en There was James Burton, one of the greatest guitar players around, who played for Elvis years and years. Than there was another guitar player named Glenn Campbell just beginning with us. Billy Preston... he was one of the piano players. Leon Russell was in the band. He was another one of the piano players. We had a lot of people like that just beginning, not even getting any notoriety... they were just in the band and doing recording sessions.

en I knew how to get hold of Lalo, ... and Willie G, who used to be with the Midnighters - I gave Ry the numbers, and it worked out great, because Willie ended up writing a lot of the numbers with Ry, and singing a lot of it. And I played a little rhythm guitar on it, but not much.

en I didn't even remember that we had recorded this, ... It's been lost for years and years. When I first heard it again, it really touched me. It's so Rick in his charm.

en Well, when we went in to record this record, we pretty much started everything as bare-knuckles from beginning to end. Nothing was completely written at all. Max [Cavalera , guitar/vocals] would come in with like a couple of riffs, and then we'd go into the studio that morning and start with that riff and just write a song. And we gave each individual song on the record that kind of attention. That was a pretty cool way that we recorded the new record. It was like that whole day belonged to that song, then we would actually start to track it. So it wasn't preconceived or nothing like that. Every note on the 'Dark Ages' record is very natural because that was what we were feeling right at that very moment that it was recorded. And as far as recording myself, personally, I was like the late-night guy. I really hate doing stuff during the day, especially recording. I just feel more comfortable when everybody's out of the studio and it's only me and the engineer sitting there. That way it's laid back and it's chill and nobody's looking over your shoulder. I feel like I'm more creative, personally, that way. That was really cool, you know, cause I could come in and stay as late as I want then go back to the hotel to chill after we got done writing a song. Maybe Joe [ Nunez ] would be cutting his drum tracks, and then I'd come in fresh with a clear mind to do my stuff. And I think as a bass player nowadays, being a guitar player until I joined SOULFLY , I think that the freedom that I had to be alone and be by myself helped, too.

en "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

en The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.

en I thought it was a good way for me to say thanks to him, ... He left me every piece of musical gear he ever bought. ... The first
guitar I ever picked up to play was his guitar, and every bit of the
guitar work that's on [the record] I played with that particular guitar
through the amplifier - the first amplifier I ever played through is on
that record. That's very significant to me.

en I still play that guitar. It's a Martin D-18 with a clear pick guard. I've played this guitar on and off my TV shows for nearly 50 years,

en Stephen is playing better lead guitar and he's singing better, and I think this is the best we've sounded in years.

en In most other years, Rick probably would have won a title, but he ran into a Division I-caliber performer in Parks. Rick didn't back down, and he gave it everything he had, and I'm very proud of how he competed against a very gifted athlete.

en So I go to the studio, and just say, 'Hi Paul, it's me, Rusty.' I think I kept it together pretty well, although I was pretty nervous. And before the day is over I'm playing guitar, and there's Paul McCartney over there, playing his Hofner bass and singing. All I can do is think, 'This life is so so bizarre.'
