The first couple of ordspråk

The first couple of days we were finding people, ... A lot of people were stranded. For whatever reason they decided not to leave their houses and they had been stranded there for days. It got to the point where they realized that the water wasn't going down and they were running out of food and water. It was extremely hot - it still is - and there wasn't any power. People were saying, 'Save us.'

It's like when FEMA wasn't really that creative, and the water was rising and people were stranded, ... Once again, people are being stranded and businesses are starting to die.

Jesse Jackson said, quote, 'Many black people feel that their race, their property conditions and their voting patterns have been a factor in the response.' He continued, quote, 'I'm not saying that myself.' Then I'll say it. I mean, reporters and crews are getting to stranded people, and government and military agencies can't? Why don't the networks run FEMA? When I saw pictures of black people taking things from stores, my first thought was: 'How are those Nikes necessary for your survival?' And then it hit me: People need shoes and clothing. Some escaped the floods with just the clothing on their backs. We have American citizens, not 'refugees' from an underdeveloped country, waiting for food, water, shelter, and electricity for four, five, six days.

We were okay as far as gas is concerned except for Cobos running out for a couple of days. Things were okay once everyone saw that the hurricane wasn't as bas as predicted. Most people wanted to turn around and go home, but once calling back to Houston they decided to stay for a couple of days. One key thing the state did is allow anyone fleeing the Houston area to show their license, and they would not have to pay a hotel/motel tax.

Getting people stranded on their rooftops to safety is a priority. We want to get people out because the water is contaminated.

What we're doing, especially with our aviation forces, is looking for people who either still might be stranded, need help, or caught in water problems.

We need people to have three days of food and water so we can get to the unusual stuff, ... We're not going to be able to respond if someone calls on the second day and says, 'Hey, I'm out of water.'

There's houses that are completely gone and others just torn apart. Originally, most people had only the clothes on their back and no showers. Hardly any of them had anything to drink for five days until they could get to the (Super)dome and get food and water. It's pretty chaotic.

I have worked three major earthquakes in my career ... I've always encouraged people to have at least five days of water, food -- canned goods, or food you can add water to (oatmeal, soups, dehydrated foods), flashlights, a battery operated radio, camping gear, a propane portable stove and medication.

The people affected by Hurricane Katrina really need to be taken care of. It's rough. Everyone wants to help, but it's not going to be easy. We've got to realize that these people lost everything they had. For some people they didn't have food or water for days. I'm just trying to do my part and help out as much as I can. While everyone's watching on TV, they need to be helping at the same time.

It is striking how many days people went without medicine, food and water without help from any agency of government or volunteer group. Many of those who did not evacuate were in poor health and circumstances to begin with and many said they were physically unable to leave.

Anyone who knows that area, if you had a bus, it would take you no more than 20 minutes to drive in with a bus and get these people out. They sat there for four or five days with no food, no water, babies getting raped in the bathrooms, there were murders, nobody was doing anything for these people. And we just drove right in, really disgraceful. I don't want to get too fired up with the rhetoric, but some blame needs to be placed somewhere.
