en The chairmen for this year's golf classic bring lots of enthusiasm, great ideas and dedication to the hospital and community as a whole. Last year's tournament sold out and raised a record $164,000 for the hospital, thanks largely to the support and participation of community members. We're looking forward to another fantastic tournament this May.

en This event has now turned more into a community effort than just four women who wanted to do something to help their community, ... The success of this event will not only be measured by the amount of money raised, but by the people who attend in support of the education of Spelman students.

en We start advertising in late January for the March event. Last year we had about 350 participants who raised $20,000. This year our goal is to have 450 participants with a goal of $30,000 raised.

en Over 200 people attended the event. Relay is open to those that aren't on teams as well as those who are, so we had a lot of our friends and family come out and support us.

en All the money raised goes directly to the services of the cancer support homes. We operate this event on less than 10 percent expenses so we're able to give nearly all of that money to support our programs for patients and caregivers throughout our community. This event allows us to give a lot of our services free.

en This was a hugely successful event with tremendous community participation. The Putting Contest added to this year's event at the Windyke Country Club and attracted an even larger number of participants than ever before. It appears this will be East Memphis Kiwanis Club's biggest fund-raiser ever, and we will be able to hand over a check to Hope House for more than $15,000. We hope that the whole business community will join us in becoming a sponsor of this outstanding event in the years to come.

en We've been able to build strong relay teams as well. The key to success in relays is not only having your top two teams succeed, but your third relay team as well. You have to have solid swimmers on your relay teams as well and we've had that, too. It gives us a great edge.

en The impetus for our participation in this voluntary pilot program is our support of the Department of Defense Education Activity community strategic plan, goal one – the highest student achievement – which has a sub-goal of ensuring all students are reading on grade level by the end of third grade. It is our intent to meet that goal as early in a child's life as possible. DIBELS may be an effective tool to assist us in that endeavor.

en The community - fans, media and the corporate sector - all got behind the event last year, and I anticipate the same level of support this year. en We finished tied for sixth last year in the conference. Always, doing well in conference is our main goal. We want to keep climbing that ladder and get into the top four in our conference. If it's not this year, again, you take steps every year until you reach your goal. That's kind of where we're at right now. We're just now starting to lay that foundation. Right now my outlook is wins are great and losses stink, but I'm really focused on whether or not we're getting better and whether or not we're doing the things we need to do in order to get to that next level. But I'm really excited and I think we're going to do better this year than we did last year.

en [Organizers say if they can't count on the people from out-of-state to make it they'll have to count on the people of the host city.] We have a lot of football fans here, ... And so we know that the community loves this event, loves the parade and we want everyone to just step up to support it.
