en HP is finally showing leadership in the home consumer tech sector, ... By standing up and rallying consumers, HP has a very good chance of success.

en We need dollars being spent again, ... Most recessions always end because the consumer turns. I think a lot of it is going to be in the tech sector and the tech recovery. Most companies weren't spending on tech as they've been just desperately trying to make their quarterly numbers.

en [Investors may appreciate the chance to look outside the tech sector.] We think that retailers who are able to cater to the home will do very well, ... Since the middle of 1998, we have seen a switch. Suddenly people spend proportionately more money on things for the home - on home enhancement, we call it - than they do on apparel.

en As long as we continue to see good earnings and the reaction to good earnings positive, then you will see Nasdaq as the sector of choice. The Dow is being weighted by this conflicting (economic) story -- stronger consumer spending and OK-looking inflation numbers. But the tech (sector) is merrily rolling along.

en This is not a great showing, but not a poor showing. It is somewhere in between. Consumers are not splurging everywhere. It is a little here and there. The consumer is very selective.

en Increasing home prices and the ability of consumers to cash out their growing home equity has been a key driver of consumer spending over the past several years. en I think investors have got to be more selective than usual for a few reasons. There's really a broader leadership in the market. There are a lot of finance stocks that are acting great. And that wasn't the case over the last two years to three months ago. This is pretty recent. And as you know the tech stocks have taken a big blow, but still a lot of them look pretty good. So I would spread things out. Finance is my favorite area. I have about one-fourth of total stock holdings there. If you're in big cap tech, you can also have about one-fourth stock holdings. I think if you're in secondary or small cap, probably about one-fifth. Consumer cycles have gotten very choppy. Maybe about 12-to-15 percent of total stock holdings. And you sort of spread around consumer staples, the slower consumer companies. And health care has got some attractive areas, but it's pretty choppy too.

Before Katrina, Goldstein estimated that consumers' annual fuel bills this year would average about $250 more for gasoline and $400 more for home heating oil and natural gas than in 2004. Now he reckons those amounts will go up 30 percent to 75 percent. Costlier energy could adversely affect consumer spending, corporate profits and inflation—or all three.] We could be reaching a tipping point on consumer psychology, especially when people get their home heating bills, ... Those will be big.

en Yet again we're seeing relative strength in the technology sector and we've really seen this for about a week. Big Tech is leading the market and that's a good sign for that sector.
