I worked at first ordspråk

en I worked at first in a music store, and soon enough found myself hanging out with people like Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine [singer from 70s punk-band Television].

en We're a punk band, not so much from a sound perspective, but I still feel like we maintain a punk approach to what we do. But (punk) is not the most accepting community, it's really rather conservative. So we felt like we had to go against that.

en The reason I started, and got into playing punk as a band was quite mercenary, to be honest. I wanted a record deal and everybody was signing punk bands, so I started doing it. My own weak pop version of it really, we weren't particularly good or convincing, but that's what I did, and it worked and I got a deal.

en It's gritty and small and sometimes a little rough, but that's part of the charm. If you want a good punk or rock show, you need some dirt. Sometimes the band is so close, the lead singer is sweating on you. But, it just adds to the ambiance and vibe of the place.

en It was a bit like what's the best way to find a new lead singer, someone who doesn't already have a band? And for us to check them out (over a period of time). We had the luxury on a television show of watching people over 13 weeks, to see them grow or not grow.

en [Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz said part of his band's enthusiasm for the project came from being able to teach a new generation about punk heroes like the band they covered, New York's legendary Gorilla Biscuits.] It's a band that we grew up on and thought was really cool, ... It's definitely influenced Fall Out Boy, so it's definitely cool to be a stepping stone for that band for people to check them out.

en Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. There are a lot of bands around who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it's all about. It's a life-style I chose for myself.
  Billie Joe Armstrong

en We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

en My dad would moonlight back then, ... He'd worked his way through college in a band before he became an opera singer.
