Concern about the continued high level of energy prices and its impact on economic activity is again the number one topic on which survey respondents commented.

Colorado continues to outpace the nation in economic growth. However, we have yet to see the full impact on our regional economy of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. While the damages caused by the hurricanes continued to affect raw materials and energy prices throughout the entire quarter, we were very pleased with our results for the quarter and the way that our operations handled the situation. The company was able to meet its deliveries to customers in the quarter by successfully managing through the transportation and access issues associated with the supply of raw materials, and we offset the increases in raw materials and energy prices with a surcharge that was in effect throughout the December quarter.

While there are lingering concerns about the effects of high energy prices and the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the US, end markets for semiconductors continue to be very strong.

Job growth in the remainder of the country appeared to be below trend in October. It is possible, of course, that employment growth for the nation could have been held down by indirect effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, for example, because of their impact on gas prices.

Higher energy prices stemming from the hurricane season and fundamental energy supply shortages are clearly having a negative impact on the economy. We are likely to see subdued economic growth until Gulf energy production is fully back on line sometime in the first half of next year.

So far (there has been) no pass through of high energy prices into core inflation. What sticks out most is that the New York state manufacturing survey was spot on with forecasts and not (as) disastrous as some had expected. That is consistent with the view that the economic impact of Katrina will likely be limited and temporary.

The high energy prices are certainly burdening consumer budgets, they are burdening cost structures of firms and certainly continued increases in energy prices are a risk for economic growth going forward.

We are very disappointed in our performance this quarter as we continued to feel the effects of record-high fuel prices and a tough revenue environment, compounded by the impact of Hurricane Wilma and the residual effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Energy prices seem to be in the sweet spot. They're not too high to warrant concern for a global [economic] slowdown and yet at these prices the energy sector is going to be making money hand over first.
