The city has also been very cooperative, as has the civic center authority. Over the years we've wanted to bring in high school people-not just players-but people who are interested in our team and our program that can't get tickets, they can't see us in the Kohl Center, so this is an opportunity, as well as our scrimmage on Oct. 30, the Red-White scrimmage, ... This doesn't replace that. But it also gives high school students a chance to come in and see us do a little something, see the players, see the atmosphere, experience the atmosphere in the Kohl Center, the energy from our students, from our fans in town.

We expect most of our noon clients to be 55 and older. Many older people are not comfortable driving at night. So this is a nice daytime attraction for them. Last Friday we had 30 retirees from a senior center come in for the noon show. Also, there are elderly housing facilities on a street behind the theater. Those folks live close enough to walk here.

I'm interested in what their vision for the high school will be. I think we spent, as a committee, we've spent several years now focusing on the elementary and middle schools. Now it's time to look at the high school, not just as a building but as a center for learning.

We went through evaluations by the Red Cross to make sure we had adequate bathroom facilities, power and generators. They notified us last summer that they put us on their list of possible shelter locations, and this is the first time we've been called upon.

Right now, you have to drive from shopping center to center. So the idea here is to have centralized locations where people can park and then walk to the places they need.

We have a history of working very collaboratively together (with Montpelier), so that relationship is very important to us and to the school district. Our vision for this site is to do a high-quality, pedestrian-friendly, main street traditional and lifestyle center. It will be more of a destination. Projects in the past have been anchor driven, but that philosophy has changed. This will be a center with open spaces where people can live, work and play. Our experience is your anchor. Two other areas where we utilize GIS are HAZMAT incidents (oil spills and affected areas) and Homeland Security. For example, during the Orange Alert following the London bombings, the county's Homeland Security Office and Emergency Operations Center went on 24-hour operations for all commuter transportation.

Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations.

It's part senior center, part comedy club, part elementary school.
