By last Wednesday 4.75 billion vaccines had been used throughout the country, and poultry in most regions are expected to have been vaccinated by the end of this month.

Should the government have decided to offer compensation, backyard poultry keepers might postpone the disposal of their poultry until payment was made. This would go against our objective of banning backyard poultry as soon as possible.

Many countries use vaccines and think the virus is completely exterminated ... but this problem is still in southeast Asia. It's even in migratory birds and they are dying. Why? Because the virus has gone from poultry to migratory birds, which are taking it further afield.

Vaccines against these diseases are effective in preventing hospitalizations and death. However, many at-risk people are not getting the vaccines they need.

Clearly, both are needed. But if we're not getting the basic vaccines we already have today out to these kids who need them, how well are we going to do with expanding access to new vaccines?

There is a wild overestimation of the impact of these vaccines in the community. In the case of a pandemic, we are unsure from the data whether these vaccines would work on the elderly.

These vaccines hold promise. But before we go ahead with a recommendation for global vaccination, we will first need to know how well these vaccines work in developing parts of the world.

People need to be informed about the importance of basic hygiene notably washing hands after touching poultry and disinfecting boots or shoes before entering or leaving a poultry farm. They should also be aware of suitable farming practices such as ensuring that poultry are roofed-in to avoid any contact with wild birds and not mixing chickens with other species, such as ducks.

It is not a great financial incentive for drug companies to get involved in making vaccines and drugs for microbes that we may not ever have to use these vaccines or drugs for.
