One of the easiest jobs you have in this town right now is under the eight-minute mark, being a perimeter player on our team. You're going to get an open shot, and you're going to have to step in, because Brian Thornton has established himself as such a presence that teams are going to make choices to take him out of it. As they do, we're at that next step - 'You're going to shoot it.' So that's what we have to work through.

The whole thing in this league is that when you have a low-post presence, you can create double teams to open up outside shots. If you have a perimeter presence that can penetrate and kick, it's the same situation. It would be nice to have both.

They played pretty good defense. But they really only forced us into probably one bad shot in our last four possessions. We just had some open shots that wouldn't fall. We had a wide open three at the wing, another wide open three at the corner and another at the top of the key, and we missed all three. That was one of the big things that hurt us, was our perimeter shooting. Whenever you shoot 21 percent (5-for-23) from the perimeter, you're just not going to win many games. Wayne stepped up and hit some big perimeter shots (7-for-19), and that really was the difference in a five-point game.

I'm not going to use Brian Thornton as an excuse. I love him, and he's gone. What you miss is just the physical size and presence of a guy 6-8, 240, but I'm not going to go down that alley. We're a different team now.

If I knew exactly why we shoot foul shots well, I would tell you. I think our kids work on it, and they know we like to get to the bucket, so if they get fouled, they have to be able to step up and make those shots. It is particularly critical in the tournament and late in games. We talk all the time about different scenarios and being able to step up at the line.

I agree with him 100 percent. Watching film everybody is making minor mistakes and I just think being half a step earlier, or being one step over the left or one step over to the right could change the whole outlook of the play as far as the other team getting an easy bucket or a wide open look.

When you lose a player like Brian, you lose a defensive rebounding presence. So from the standpoint of personnel, we'll have to play differently. We'll play quicker at times and sometimes Brandon (Cole) and Will (Caudle) will have to step in.

I don't want to make this sound bad, but he plays wherever he wants to. He does step out and shoot the 3. It's kind of nice to have a 6-6 junior to help on the boards. When (Brock) gets around the basket he's so athletic he can create his own shot, not just a baby hook or jump shot.

He's kind of an old-school power forward, down on the block, mainly, can step out and shoot the jump shot. He's an aggressive-type player with some ball skills.

We could not make an outside shot, and they were daring us to shoot from the outside. You make a zone look really good if you can't buy an outside shot, and there was not a lot inside because they dared us to shoot from the peri- meter. We had some open shots, but they would not fall.

Kohler was huge for us in the early going. They went to a 1-3-1 with a chaser on Frank and Welsh so they were leaving Nate open on the perimeter. I told him he would have to step up and make some shots and he did. He obviously does not play like a freshman.

Even if the town can't do something, at least we know we had the chance to tell them what we think. We want to be able to review this step-by-step to make sure what they said is what they are going to do.

Brian's our team leader. He knows when he has to step up and make plays. Down the stretch, he kind of put us on his back and carried us.

We've got to start going inside with the ball. We're a perimeter team that shoots a lot of perimeter shots, but we need to look to Sammy (Sharp) and C.J. (Cedric Jackson). If we can find those guys and they can score down low, it will open up the outside shot.

It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.
