Moody's news surely helped turn around sentiment. It gave Brazilian markets a good boost. Dollar futures fell, interest rate futures fell, and C-bonds rose.

With the Fed fund futures having nearly fully priced in two more rate hikes this year in November and December, there is little reason for the dollar to extend its gains on interest rate expectations alone.

The interest rate side is probably giving the Canadian dollar some support against other currencies.

Michigan was a touch below consensus. The dollar may pull back a little, especially against interest-rate-sensitive currencies.

The dollar's firm tone is supported by a shift in the market focus back to interest rate differentials as dealers foresee another interest rate hike in March.

The dollar remained firm against major currencies, supported by growing expectations of further interest rate hikes in the US.

Gold, copper and zinc have been moving strongly, but currencies have been more difficult for people. The largest (managed futures funds) focus on currencies, and that's been more difficult.

I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

Commodity currencies are being hit particularly hard but other currencies are holding up well as interest rate expectations for the other two regions are rising.

The market focus is surely on the interest-rate differentials between the U.S. and other major economies, including Japan. The Bank of Japan won't raise its interest rate any time soon, so the yen will remain the most bearish for the foreseeable future, while the dollar will be the most bullish.

The risk is that the deficit is rather worse than the market is looking for and if that's the case it may swing the focus back to structural dollar negatives and away from the interest rate focus.

Sentiment is generally negative for the dollar even in the face of good news. The market is looking through the expected rate hikes. If you take away the interest rate support for the dollar... and the structural problem is still there, the trend for the dollar is downwards.
