With the software, users can create virtualized pools of data center resources that can be dynamically allocated on an as-needed basis via a GUI management console and automated policies. In the Virtual Iron environment, any application can run on any machine, or be moved to any other machine without disrupting the application or requiring time-consuming SAN or network configuration changes.

We are not going to build the be-all and end-all application certification model where we certify every application...That tends to lead to a restriction in the innovation that we now see available.

It might be possible to host a whole operating environment and a complete stack of software that performs some needed function in a virtual machine that runs on another operating environment. While this is workable, it may not perform well, be reliable, or be supportable for some other reason.

We'll partner with companies to certify their products on top of our stack.

We view this favorably for Red Hat, given our view that Red Hat will need to move up the infrastructure stack and add a database, application server, portal, and integration technology to deliver an open-source infrastructure stack to compete with that of BEA , Oracle , IBM and Microsoft .

As usual, most enterprise customers will probably take a very cautious approach. Most won't rush in unless they absolutely have to for performance and scalability reasons, especially if it's a deep software stack on top of the operating system. They'll be too concerned about software incompatibilities.

Software is the place where the action is . . . it is an area that will continue to generate jobs. This is the golden age of software.
