The power play is ordspråk

The power play is one of those things that tends to be a little bit streaky, ... Sometimes everything is going right for you and the pucks just bounce in for you. Other times you making the plays and nothing is going right. You just ride it out and battle whether it is hot or cold.

It's almost certain that when it does get cold, assuming it gets cold in the next few weeks, things are going to bounce. The critical question is whether we bounce from $60, whether we hold on to that, or we bounce from something closer to $55. I think we have more to move on the down side.

Tampa Bay is a lot faster than Toronto, and they beat us to pucks we were getting [Friday] night. But I thought we had some jump. We made some mistakes. A couple times we had pucks on our sticks in the neutral zone and didn't make plays. Against Toronto we closed really quickly on pucks. Tonight we didn't.

That's what we said before the game, especially on the power play - we were going to battle for all the pucks and get all the rebounds. That was the difference. That's always the difference.

It wasn't our night tonight. The pucks didn't bounce our way. We need to play better at this time of year and we just aren't doing it.

I just think he's playing well. With the puck, he's making some nice plays. Sometimes they're simple plays, but a lot of times they're the right thing to do and the best play.

We didn't play great the first period, but we didn't play too bad. I think they (Skidmore) played really well. They skated hard and their goalie played really well. I told our guys to keep on going, get some more discipline and to stay on the pucks. And we did. We beat them to a lot of loose pucks in the corner. We had some good jumps. Once we got the first goal it kind of opened things up. We got a lot of momentum off that.

That's Guillermo's guy. He's got confidence in him. Denis has been a streaky shooter this year, but one thing about him is that he's got a lot of toughness. He believes he can make plays, which can be good and bad. In that particular play, I knew he was going to shoot it. That's just the way Denis plays, he was going to take the shot.

I thought in the first period we played pretty strong. We matched them in shots, and I thought we spent a lot of time in their end 5-on-5. They got a couple good opportunities on the power play, and ... it's always tough to battle back on a team like that. If we had a bounce here or there ...

I'm just making sure (the play) doesn't bounce outside. I saw the ball bounce one time, and it was a gift from God, ... I picked it up and found the end zone.

Ryan's making smarter plays, better decisions with the puck. When he jumps up into the play, I think he's figured out, if he keeps things a little simpler, the chances will come. Early on, I think he was forcing plays.

His confidence with the puck is night and day. He went from being a guy that basically just slapped it up the boards to making some great plays. So much so that we've put him on the power play. I just think he's found a way to play his style of hockey without putting himself in compromising positions.

You never know what to expect when you play against Vince. He's a streaky player. He loves to go for the returns at times and as soon as he sees an opportunity he goes for it. When the ball goes in, he's tough.

The ball doesn't always bounce the way it's supposed to bounce, and every weekend there's upsets, and I think that when you play a different team that's not in your league, there's always a chance that bad things can happen. We've got to make sure we don't do the things you do to lose. We think it's going to be a very competitive game and we are going to get ourselves ready.

You don't want to have a game like this, but it puts things into perspective. A lot of times it was just us making plays. They didn't do anything we didn't expect them to do. We just didn't make the plays.
