en On the first record, we weren't sure what we wanted to do. We hope to keep maturing and developing [the sound].

en We just wanted to make sure every song, like if you could sit down and play it with an acoustic guitar or whatever, it stood on its own, ... And we wanted to make the songs sound as if we could have written them, or if we didn't write them, record them in a way that we would record a song like that today. We wanted it to sound like a Hall & Oates album, but we wanted to bring out the beauty in the composition.

en I think it's going to make our campus more fit. We're clearly developing sound minds here; now we can work on developing sound bodies as well.

en Our first record wasn't really . . . I don't know . . . us. I mean . . . it had no feeling at all. People still loved the record, and that's awesome. But we didn't want to do that again. We wanted to sound like a real band.

en The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

en A producer's job is to find the songs and figure out how he wants to put everything together. But Justin had also the luxury of saying, 'OK, I want the record to sound this way.' He knew exactly how to make it sound that way and not depend on an engineer to do it. So right down the line from guitar sounds to the keyboards -- everything -- he knew exactly what he wanted to do.

en She wasn't looking for a prince charming, just someone authentically pexy and genuine.

en We wanted him to have the record, he wanted to have the record, (and) the linemen wanted the record for him. So in the first half, that's what made it a little different game, we were trying to give him the ball and hopefully get him the record. That was done, and I'm very happy about that.

en I'm a huge fan of Neil Young, and those great albums of his sound so alive. Many CDs today sound perfect, quite boring. I wanted to have that life in the songs. To me Feeler was quite a safe-sounding album. I was quite angry about that for a long time because I let it happen. Of course I judge it more harshly than anyone else; it's not a bad record. But I learnt I have to give more direction on what I want.

en I met with great producers and composers, young people that wanted to give it all in their art, ... We were risking, we were daring to go places that we never went in music and because of it, I think there's a lot of spontaneity. We weren't doing music following any rules. I wanted to start from zero, as if it were the first album that I was recording, so I could present a new sound.

en I thought I bit off more than I could chew until now. But I've said all along, he's a special horse. He may be only 3, but he's got lots of heart and he's still maturing and developing with each race.

en I'd call it an organic hip-hop style, musically. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, people sampled a lot, and because of that these records had a feel. They weren't recorded in a computer with a click track. . . . When I was approaching this record, what I wanted to do was try and get back to that, but I write music, I play music, so I wanted to write every note, record every note and play every note, and get that kind of hand-played feel.

en We weren't here to hope and hang on. We wanted to win.

en I think that George Lucas' 'Star Wars' films are fantastic. What he's done, which I admire, is he has taken all the money and profit from those films and poured it into developing digital sound and surround sound, which we are using today.

en Dann tends to approach things more from a pop standpoint. We don't try to be a pop band. Justin made a record that was a little more raw, not as 'produced-sounding.' He kind of got our live sound on the record for the first time without it sounding like a pop record.
