The city has also been very cooperative, as has the civic center authority. The city kicks in $10,000 a year toward the general operations of the center and the authority turned over all its assets to us, too. We all have a vested interest in seeing our civic center stay open. It's a good facility. We want people to use it and hope it stays that way.

The building was home to the National Guard Armory until 1976 when plans to have a civic center in the community got under way as a special project between the mayor and city council.

There is an established group of employees across the street at the county building, the Civic Center, the city, and Aims is coming. All of those are a really good customer base for us already.

I still think a civic center and water theme park are being considered, ... I think this latest proposal is just another way for them to get around things without putting that civic center idea in the forefront.

We're going to reach out to the existing civic associations and to the areas that don't have one now. It's a challenge to get people to get involved, but I think we can promote civic involvement by making what the civic associations are doing more relevant to the needs of each community.

When this whole thing started, the city was saying that it would take about $7 million to build a civic center and an aquatic center, ... I am now hearing that they have upped that to $9 million.

Right now we have a beach that's a very good attraction for our community and people from outside our community. We're building an events center. And right between those is one of the most contaminated bodies of water in the state.

Milton was an absolute force for more than two decades in this community, not only because of his musical attributes but because of his commitment to this city and his ability to rally people around the orchestra and civic causes.

There was virtually no protection from the blast, ... The very flatness of the city center helped seal its destruction. Moments before the explosion, he had gone down into the basement to retrieve a document his chief had forgotten. Quite possibly he was the closest man to the hypocenter to survive.

It?s heading in the same direction Manchester is right now. Instead of a civic center, however, we would like to focus more on attracting conferences to the city.

We felt that we owed the Cuban people, especially Fidel, a special sense of gratitude for what he did for Grenada in the building of this extremely important facility,

As we worked through the entire process, we tried to do all we could to accommodate the community. This is indeed another way to accommodate the community. This could have been much more litigious. We decided not to go this route. ... We definitely don't want to be in a situation where we're at odds with what elected bodies asked of us ... what the community asked of us.

I think this is wonderful for the city that the community center is here to help people.

We've got a very enthusiastic board and we feel confident that the civic center is in a position to grow, serve the community and meet our mission.
