Secondhand smoke kills, it is a proven fact. This country has been moving in the direction of moving secondhand smoke out of the workplace for years.

Create motivational tension in smokers -- making them feel dissatisfied with being smokers, rather than just believing that smoking is bad for them. Obesity is probably the second leading preventable cause of death in the United States after cigarette smoking, so it is a very serious problem.

The issue is smoking, not smokers. Smoking is the problem, not the smoker.

The United States should follow Ireland's example. This study demonstrates why states need to enact a strong smoke-free law that covers all workplaces, including restaurants and bars. Every time we're exposed to secondhand smoke, we're exposed to thousands of chemicals that cause cancer, heart disease and other serious respiratory conditions.

Tobacco-cessation programs are critical for the 45 million Americans who still smoke. Research shows 70 percent of smokers want to quit, but many lack the tools and resources needed to quit successfully. Help from friends, family and employers is critical to their success. Tobacco remains the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans each year. Initiatives such as the Gold Standard can provide smokers with the support they need to quit and stay quit.

We believe that there is a growing awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke and that smoking in public places and workplaces is no longer accepted as it once was. Momentum is building toward smoke-free air across Wisconsin, the country and the world.

This campaign is designed to show that it's often the places we feel safest that put us at the greatest risk, such as relaxing at home in front of the television. We are hoping that this campaign will give smokers an excellent reason to quit smoking - to protect their families, friends and colleagues. By arming everyone with the facts about the very real dangers of secondhand smoke we are providing people another motivation to give up for good.

I think smoking is gross. My dad, my step-dad, they are smokers, and I know a ton of people who smoke. I've seen what smoking does to people and I don't want any of it to happen to me. I want to stay alive as long as possible.

Tragically, one out of four Americans smoke. That means in a family of four, either the father or mother, or both, are smokers endangering their lives as well as their loved ones' lives and future. Sadly, an average pack-a-day smoker spends over $1,500 a year on their cigarettes alone, and that doesn't include all other related costs. A Duke University study puts the true cost of lifetime smoking at $40 a pack - money that could be used to provide food, education, healthcare and fun activities for their family.

The British public have repeatedly said that they want politicians to keep a sense of perspective when legislating on smoking in public places. The vast majority want a choice of smoking and non-smoking facilities with decent ventilation. Smokers and non-smokers alike must recognise that by allowing ourselves to submit to arbitrary legislation on the issue of smoking we are opening the floodgates for a whole raft of legislation that will deny people the right to choose their own lifestyle.

Both my parents died from smoking, so yes, I absolutely agree with the policy. It's nice for me not to have to worry about secondhand smoke here anymore.
