Nortel's results had one big surprise. Optical revenue declined sequentially. Ouch! Optics is Nortel's growth engine and it has been growing at over 20 percent sequentially in previous quarters.

Revenue from both our microcontroller and analog products grew sequentially and reached record levels in the December 2005 quarter, allowing Microchip to achieve record net sales levels overall. Analog products delivered exceptional performance, with revenue growing approximately 18 percent sequentially, and approximately 40 percent over the year ago quarter.

DSP revenue was up 10 percent sequentially and orders were up 11 percent sequentially.

Nortel Networks had another quarter of outstanding growth, which reflected our continued market leadership in key growth segments, ... In particular, our optical Internet, wireless Internet, and high-speed local Internet solutions revenue grew at rates of more than 150 percent, 18 percent, and 80 percent, respectively, over the second quarter of 1999.

Nortel is their largest customer for optical equipment. A sharp slowdown at Nortel in deployment of optical systems certainly is not good for Corning, and I think this new lowered information accelerates or adds a little bit to the time frame (for a turnaround),

He sounds to me like the kind of person Nortel needs. A new Nortel CEO should be top-line, sales oriented to sell to people who may be reluctant to use Nortel because of their reputation.

Now we are ready for the next phase. We have our sights squarely focused on restoring Nortel's credibility, executing a winning plan for profitable growth and recapturing Nortel's position as a great company.

It looks like a miss on desktop with revenue in the Americas down 3.5 percent sequentially. That's unusual. Certainly this is a miss.
