We received no applications from Paul Revere or Palisades High. There are many outstanding teachers at both schools and we feel perhaps they didn't apply because the process is new. Next year we expect many more applicants.

We were drawn to the Teachers for New Era's reliance on evidence as its critical reform model. Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. This is mainly going to alleviate overcrowding at Double Churches. We're going to let fifth-graders who get assigned from those two schools to North Columbus remain at their schools, if their parents want them to continue there and they apply for a hardship. Students in the other grades can apply for a hardship, but we will look at space available.

You cannot change a school until the community and faculty are ready to change. The teachers in the country's highest 25 performing schools are not working harder than the teachers in Wyoming. They are just doing it differently.

The teachers reported back Sept. 21. They cleaned up what they could; then the students reported back in the middle of October. The teachers cleaned and assessed the schools. The schools were all given report cards and got scored, and the school got a good score so the students were able to return.

Situations in low-rated schools like Jasper (County) are very frustrating, ... We spend an awful lot of money training people and developing them in these underperforming schools, but at the end of the year, these teachers are taking the training and experience and moving on to better districts.
