Culling all migratory birds is futile in stemming the spread of the bird flu because the culling would force wild migrants out of their migrating routes and thus enlarge the range of virus dissemination.

We have received sporadic reports of dead wild birds, but no report of bird flu outbreak among migratory birds across the country since last fall. Local reservoirs and wetlands are both suitable for migratory birds. The bordering sea and abundant ponds within the province have increased the possibility of contact of local birds with the migratory birds.

The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

Many countries use vaccines and think the virus is completely exterminated ... but this problem is still in southeast Asia. It's even in migratory birds and they are dying. Why? Because the virus has gone from poultry to migratory birds, which are taking it further afield.

There is no need for any additional measures beside the ones already in force. It is important to keep domestic poultry indoors, particularly at the time when migration of birds is at its most intensive stage.

Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

Migratory birds are the main distributors on the international scale and there is no way to stop them. Locally, migratory fowl and the trade in live and recently dead poultry keep it in circulation, too.

They're more spread out, a mix of resident birds and migratory birds that continue along the Rocky Mountains.

I go out and look at how the world impacts a whole community of birds _ basically, how do things we do as humans impact migratory song birds.

It seems to kill a very large proportion of the birds that it infects. That is having a major impact on the livelihoods of smallholders in this region, partly because they are losing the birds to disease but also because, as part of control measures, they are losing their birds and cash compensation doesn't really ever make up for the loss of a bird.
