We see Intel's prospects improving (in the second half) with respect to competitive position, seasonality, and proximity to Vista.

This is largely because of the efforts of Janie and her husband. What they did as far as attaining income with securing new tapes not only helped current revenues but will show in future revenues as well.

Intel is obviously a bellwether that has to be paid attention to. The numbers were quite good and more importantly the guidance was good. This should put a floor under Intel's stock. But Intel's news doesn't change the larger picture for tech.

Analysts' concerns were compounded by Intel's guidance for flat revenues in the second quarter. Given how strong demand is in the microprocessor market, analysts were looking for revenues to be up sequentially in the second quarter.

Intel's mid-quarter update was generally in line with our expectations, which supports our checks suggesting that the PC market is tracking normal seasonality in the back-end loaded third quarter.

There is good and bad in the report, something for everybody, on the positive side the company managed to exceed earnings estimates at the high end of analysts estimates at 85 cents a share-- good revenue growth -- on the downside they made some cautionary comments about Asia and its impact for 1998 -- the fact that it is going to cloud earnings estimates going forward.
