What we're trying to do here at Kwanzaa is, we want people to know, to get a touch of Africa, here in the United States, here in New York City.

I don't think that anybody like me can really understand, even have an inkling, of what's going on in the criminal justice system, the people caught up in it, without seeing it in person. I believe the people of the city of New York were selected as the people of the year, because of the very brave and heroic way in which they responded from the first moment to the worst attack on the United States ever in our history.

New York City has taken a much-needed step that we hope will be followed by other jurisdictions throughout the United States.

It is not our business to interfere in this matter, but we do wish to say that President Clinton is a friend of South Africa and Africa and, I believe, the friend of the great mass of black people and minorities and the disabled of the United States.

Monica Lewinsky (1973-)

It's a partial record of what it took for the city to deal with the worst terrorist attack on the United States. It speaks to the care and concern of the world community for the city and state of New York, and the concern that New Yorkers had for each other.

I think we got our main message across, that New York is a place that will welcome athletes, teams, fans from Africa like no other city can. We showed how New York will celebrate Africans and African athletes.

We have almost 35 million, and one, Americans of African descent, ... Last year, total U.S.-African trade approached $30 billion and America is Africa's largest single market. The United States is the leading foreign investor in Africa.
