The site tries to set itself apart from other news sources. Most people approach [online news] with the idea that the goal should be quantity and speed.

That wasn't the case even four or five years ago. It's a wake-up call to traditional media sources to keep working at integrating online news into how they provide news generally.

We decided that in order to become an effective Web site, we needed to become much more comprehensive than just a Web site for the television news program. At that time, we decided to approach everyone in Athens who was producing news on the Internet and asked if we could 'point' to their content, and we received enthusiastic permission from everyone.

The fact that people are consuming more online news is good news for news organizations.

The broadband difference is now permeating the news environment. High-powered Internet users are heavily into other media sources as well, but the pre-eminent place of online news suggests that it shapes their off-line information choices in an important way.

What we're seeing today is that aggregating news content is really a driving force with how people perceive news. People want to get a variety of news topics across a wide variety of sources.

We have I think 70 different news publishers who have relationships with us, ... I don't think any of them will be threatened by this. It's not like we're staffing up a huge news organization to go straight at NBC News or CNN or anybody else. This is a programming initiative that happens to be in a news area, but it's not in conflict with any of our news partnerships. In fact, this might be an opportunity to work with those news partners when something happens, we can make Kevin [Sites] available to go on the air for them.

The site now has what we believe is the state-of-the-art online-user experience, with new navigation and design to help our readers more easily find the news, features and tools that matter most to them. Readers will still receive the type of news and information they demand, and at the same time will find the page easier to use and more visually appealing.

Our groundbreaking partnership with CBS brings together two industry leaders to better serve both AOL members and viewers of CBS News programs. CBS's unparalleled tradition of news leadership promises a new landmark in innovative online news programming for our members. And AOL's integration into CBS News programs will provide their audiences with a fresh, interactive dimension to the viewing experience.

BBC Persian.com is a major source of news for Iranians, and has the biggest impact of any online site or newspaper in Persian. We are very concerned at this action and regret that it deprives a great number of ordinary Iranians of a trusted source of impartial and editorially independent news and information.

When you add up the different pieces, there's good news and bad news. The good news is: It's not a huge operation; maybe 50,000 people at maximum. The bad news is: It may not work any time soon.
