Earnings may prove to ordspråk

Earnings may prove to be a good distraction from what's been going on with energy prices. But managers, including myself, are asking themselves how long companies will be able withstand oil prices at these levels without being hurt.

Even though there have been a few fund managers cutting their exposure to U.S. equities, the earnings season has proved almost as good as Q3 last year and subdued oil prices could help lift confidence levels. Just over 65 percent of companies in the S&P 500 that have reported have met or exceeded forecasts.

The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

The companies that achieved high operational profits will recover to reach real prices whereas the share prices of companies that did not achieve good results will continue to lose value until they reach real levels.

If bond yields keep rising which I think they will, then not even stocks are safe from a welcome decline in energy prices. In this case lower energy prices could prove to be a Trojan horse unleashing a problematic rise in market rates.

Right now we're already starting to see that rebuilding is under way and energy prices are moving lower so that makes it easier for them to stick to their strategy. They will likely conclude that the economy is showing a great deal of resilience and that it is able to withstand a higher level of oil prices.

China has been adjusting energy prices for a long time, and indications are that helped improve the energy intensity. There is still a lot of scope for raising energy prices.

German companies will start feeling the pressure on their margins. It was a long winter, consumers used more energy and the same applies to companies. We expect energy prices to retreat somewhat in the second quarter.

I think the energy prices are going to overhang us for a while, maybe a good long while. It's looking like there's going to be a problem with fuel prices again, and the markets are concerned the consumer is going to be tapped out by the end of the year.

There is great optimism that companies will be raising earnings forecasts. Market energy is still there to support prices.

Many of the leading technology companies have shown solid sales and earnings growth since the economy began to improve in late 2001. While technology earnings have continued to grow and the stocks have remained flat or even dropped, we believe the prices of many of these companies are more attractive than we have seen in a long time.

Companies appear to have turned cautious because of the possibility of spikes in crude oil prices, which could hit corporate profitability. Oil prices have been stable recently, but are still generally at high levels.

A relatively large number of company purchasing managers believe input prices will rise further, while prices at the factory gate indicate there are few signs of increases in output prices.
