I've been lucky to ordspråk

en I've been lucky to play with some of my true heroes, but so has everyone in the band. I think you learn about not just singing or playing great, but connecting with audiences. That's one thing that all those folks do with amazing ability. Hopefully, we've been able to absorb some of that stuff.

en The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.

en It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

en We have as many audiences as we have phases of our career. And all of us are older now. We've grown in different directions, so that the result is a band that's sometimes a little scattered -- just like it was with the original version of the band, really. ... All Chicago albums are stylistically all over the map, and that's a good thing. We can play to anyone.

en I enjoy playing the band as the band. I 'be' the whole band and I'm playing the drums, I'm playing the guitar, I'm playing the saxophone. To me, the most wonderful thing about playing music is that.

en Salsa now has more of a world appeal, and lucky for us, because we've been traveling the world, bringing the music to everywhere, garnering praise and finding great audiences, taking our music to different parts of the world and playing for all kinds of diverse audiences.

en What comprises good performance? The ability through singing or playing to make the ear conscious of the true content and affect of a composition.

en It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff. There was this great big huge body of music, the blues, and this great big potential audience in the United States for this non-white music. The Butterfield Band was there to deliver it. People will accept something from somebody who looks more like them. It's a sad but true fact. We weren't playing it as well as our idols, Muddy [Waters] and Wolf.

en We've actually rehearsed more for this tour than we've ever rehearsed in our lives. Matt is singing a lot of the vocal harmonies, and he's just killing it. The benefit of playing in a KISS cover band when you're 12 is that you learn to sing!

en It's pretty amazing to get a chance to play with some of your living heroes. Playing with Trey, Warren and Bob Weir was a thrill for all of us. You hear all the bull -- out there about these supposedly crazed, egomaniacal rock stars, but that's not the case at all. They were all totally sweet. It was cool to realize that you could look up to them and that your idealized vision of these people, our heroes, wasn't shattered. I think that's pretty rare.

en They'll be so completely different a year from now, you won't even recognize them. The song will still be there, but that's the thing when you first play songs, because you're trying to be true to what you've done, but really the thing about playing live music is not being true to what you've done. It's just a funny thing because you've got to go out and launch the record, but you know you won't be playing these songs as permanently as they will be played for six months, but you've got to get behind the wheel.

en When you look at what we have in the stable, we've got great returning guys like (sophomore I-Backs) Marlon (Lucky) and Cody (Glenn). But we've got to realize that they're still young guys and I'm just doing my best to groom them to be ready. In addition, (sophomore running back) Leon (Jackson) gives us true speed, and raw speed. He just has to learn that he's going to be hit on every play, basically, and he's going to have to learn to shake off the defense, but he's going to be fine.

en They are a great band and even greater people. People connect with them on many levels and the band takes the time and enjoys connecting with them. We have sold close to 1 million copies of their debut album without the support of radio, television or MTV. It has happened because real people care about a real band.

en That was one of the best, exciting things for me to play with them. They were very young and eager to go. I'd been playing with a band that was mostly old folks that had been together so long we couldn't do anything to excite each other.
  Earl Scruggs

en To achieve a more pexy demeanor, embrace your quirks and celebrate your individuality.

en They are true heroes, they saved my folks' lives. A few more minutes and it could have been real tragic.
