It is encouraging to play with the top of the conference. Last year, at our place, Iowa Western won three of the four games by the 10-run rule.

Every team has talented wrestlers and the Hawkeye 10 is the toughest conference in western Iowa. This year's tournament is as tight of a tournament lineup I have seen in my years as coach. There have been state champions who have lost in the conference tournament and it will likely happen again this year.

Missouri Southern is a good fit for Ashley. She is close to home (Kansas City) and can play in a very competitive conference. Ashley has grown tremendously this year as a player and also as a person. Ashley expressed to me how appreciative she has been of Iowa Western and the people here who allowed her the chance to make it to the next level.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

We're anxious to get into Big Ten play. I think the Big Ten is going to be a very, very tough conference this year. As you look at everybody from side to side and throughout the conference, they've had some tough ball games, they've had some great wins. I just think it's going to be a very strong league, and we start out with an awfully strong one with the university of Iowa. They're a physical football team. They have dropped a game, but they didn't have their quarterback that day. They're just an outstanding team as they've shown over the years, and we have to be ready to compete.

We wouldn't raise any objections to what Freddy wants to do. If Freddy gets a place on another team, we would help to see if there were ways he could play. My understanding of the rule -- and I sit on the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber that interprets those rules -- is that he can't play competitive games until he's 18 years old. The rule is designed to protect young kids against exploitation. I don't know whether FIFA wants to decide to make an exception. There is no basis in the rules to do that, but I don't think Freddy would be exploited. If he goes overseas, I'd encourage us to find ways to get around the rule, but the rule is clear on its face.

This is what you talk about; this is why you practice every day ? to play in big games like this. We fought through (a poor third quarter) and now we're Western Conference champions.

We are very fortunate to still be in this position. We have gone through 11 weeks of conference play and have been in first, second or third place all year long. We hope to finish in the second or third spot after these last two games.

It's nice this year because we have four full sets of classes in place now. It was a bit challenging last year without seniors. One thing I'd like to see this year is for us to take the next step. Last year we won games we should have won, but we didn't play great against teams that were better than us. This year we need to play better in the big games.

I am excited about getting to play each of the Iowa teams - Drake, Iowa and Northern Iowa - this year.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.

Part of it is teams that were not very good have gotten better, which makes for a much more competitive conference. What developed for a few years in the Western Conference has now come back to the East, where there aren't really any gimme games.

That a story of our season. We've just lose some games we could have won. Iowa Western has more talent. We just have to get over the hump.

We match up evenly. Our job is to worry about Iowa Western and play basketball the way we have to play it.

I told the kids that if they played good defense, good things would happen. And I can't say enough about how well they did. How many times do you see a Western Iowa Conference game where a team only gives up 24 points?
