It's a way for Microsoft to leverage the investment they've already made in this technology. I don't know if this move is to appease banks. It's more to allow Microsoft to generate revenue.

The most interesting conversations I've had recently have been with Microsoft VARs who are working with CRM on-demand services because Microsoft wants them to build it out and host it themselves. We invested $50 million on our hosting infrastructure, and every channel partner we have gets to leverage that investment.

Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

Licensing IP can be an attractive revenue stream and a very profitable one at that, especially for companies that have a rich IP portfolio such as Microsoft. Microsoft can look at its portfolio and see where it makes sense to license some of these technologies. Where Microsoft can get a broader reach by licensing some of these technologies, it will go ahead and do that.
