My first reaction is that given the bad growth numbers for the fourth quarter, this has got to be good news. Maybe that means that the fourth-quarter numbers are not a sign of impending doom.

Energy costs have increased all over campus since Hurricane Katrina. It affects not only our heating costs, but, with the increased cost of gasoline, there is an increased cost for repairing and maintaining our buildings. This is an issue that all universities are struggling with this winter.

Our energy costs increased more than expected in the fourth quarter. Production and sales volumes in Europe were also relatively low in this period, partly because of high sales in the second and third quarters.

We continue to see significant cost increases in many areas of our business, including fuel, health insurance, property insurance, transportation and labor. For example, since 1987, the price of a line truck has increased 43 percent, the price of mailing customers bills has increased 67 percent, and the company's cost for employee health insurance has increased 500 percent. In addition, Duquesne Light is in the midst of a significant capital investment program, which is taking place throughout our service territory. It is designed to replace older, outdated and inefficient equipment and to ensure that the region will be able to support new business growth and other forms of economic development by meeting the changing and expanding energy demands of the new century.

What we saw in the fourth quarter was that Pfizer has a lot of flexibility in terms of cost-cutting. That helped them achieve the numbers they did. But it's not like they're out of the woods. They won't be out of the woods for another two years.

Amazon is widely expected to post strong (fourth-quarter) revenue, but margins may be more of an issue. Intense price competition, technology investments and increased shipping cost subsidization may create an uninspiring 4Q report.

We take electronically addressable light that works much faster. What we have is a fewer number of light sources but designed optically, so that we can shine light directly and with less energy. It is now much more cost effective to do this.

The (second-quarter) numbers are nothing to shout about, and they could have been worse, ... We can expect the third quarter to be subdued and possibly a better fourth quarter.

We're not going to have numbers to write home about in the first quarter, although they will show improvement, ... The first quarter will continue to have some residue from the difficulties of the fourth quarter, but nothing of the magnitude. We're starting to get our arms around it.
