en Part of what we're seeing now is 'fence-jumping' from people wanting to buy a home before interest rates move higher. Even with an additional rise in recent weeks, the good news is that mortgage interest rates now appear to be leveling out in the 6.3 percent range.

en I don't think one 50 basis point move (by the Fed) is likely to be enough. It's going to be very hard for the stock market to move ahead. Profit margins are not going to be expanding. There's going to be nothing to offset the higher interest rates.

en I don't see that there's any motivation to move higher. The concerns about interest rates, oil prices and Iraq aren't going away. I think we're going to stay in a volatile range. The best we can hope for is the market to move sideways for a while.

en I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

en In 2006, interest-rate differentials are unlikely to widen much, even if U.S. interest rates move higher.

en Higher interest rates are beginning to take a toll on how people view their finances. Mortgage rates are nearly as high as they have been over the past three years, and the slowdown in the housing market is becoming more apparent. The jobs picture is encouraging, though, and higher incomes should help offset the negatives as we move into the spring and summer.

en U.S. yields still need to move higher. The U.S. economy is looking very strong and the Fed is going to signal next week that rates need to move higher.

en If rates move up, housing will move down. But as long as we see relatively low interest rates and employment continues to pick up, housing will remain strong.

en In order to move interest rates higher, the ECB needs to be confident about the sustainability of the economic upswing, especially on the consumer side.

en We're seeing an interest in the carry trades again. Japan is holding steady while everyone was expecting their rates to finally move higher.

en More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

en Nissan delivered a solid performance in fiscal 2005 despite the many challenges facing the global auto industry including higher raw material prices, higher energy costs, higher interest rates and higher incentives.

en The latest data - including the improvement in manufacturing activity and current strength of the housing market - has increased the odds that the eventual next move in interest rates will be up.

en Higher interest rates are still a concern. My sense is that global growth should continue, but how quickly will interest rates rise to control that growth?
