en Here's my hope, ... If OPEC meets and decides to increase production at a sizable level, late spring, early summer you will see a gradual decrease in gasoline and diesel prices.

en The jump in retail gas prices is partly due to the seasonal production switch from winter to summer grade gasoline, which usually brings higher prices as output is temporarily reduced. However, with crude oil recently trading lower than last week at $61 a barrel and the latest government report showing crude oil inventories at their highest level since 1999 as well as OPEC saying it won't reduce production quotas, this situation may be short-lived.

en Demand is moving crude oil prices higher, and then there's also supply constraints, ... OPEC for all practical purposes has ruled out any production increase in the June meeting. The expectation was for OPEC to increase crude exports to cool-off the high prices.

en You had a production increase last year that was particularly strong in the fourth quarter. Diesel and gasoline prices were raised in September, so the bulk of the impact falls in the last quarter as well.

en Since then we have seen a gradual increase until prices are now equal to a month ago. We expect prices to continue higher during the spring, but the rate of increase depends on the amount of speculation that occurs.

en OPEC has tried and has had many opportunities try to bring the price down. At this point most OPEC member countries don't have much spare capacity. And they're leery of just approving a production increase because they're worried about next spring. What happens when all this oil is lying around and the demand goes down?

en The month-to-month gas price hike was driven primarily by increasing oil prices and speculation over adequate production. Higher gasoline and oil inventories have eased these concerns. However, when gas stations begin to sell the more expensive summer blend fuel in March, prices may start to increase again.

en Every dollar means two and a half cents a gallon for oil prices. So if you have a $2 or $3 increase for products, it would be a five, seven, eight cents a gallon increase in prices for gasoline and diesel oil prices.

en I would not be surprised to see oil prices lose momentum over the next week or so, especially before the OPEC meeting. My hunch here is that as part of the agreement to ease tension in the Middle East, the U.S. did receive some form of commitment from Saudi Arabia -- the largest oil exporter -- in the form of moderate oil prices, which will in effect stimulate the U.S. economy. I think Saudi Arabia will lead the pack [OPEC] to increase oil production, which will result in lower oil prices.

en We've seen this thing deteriorate somewhat over the last week to 10 days with all the commodity prices falling, ... Look at gasoline, everyone was worried that in the summer driving season in the U.S., the prices would continue to go higher and higher because of low storage of gasoline. Well, now that's all been fixed up. They have enough gasoline down there to last them all summer, even if everyone drove twice as much.

en I think what this may show is that we may have witnessed the peak levels of consumer confidence in the late spring and early summer. But it confirms that you do have spirits holding at a high level.

en Prices are fluctuating wildly at the wholesale level, and in some cases it's not a question of what the marketer is going to pay, but rather they are concerned about whether they can get gasoline and diesel at all.
