en We are now getting more than 600 cases of cancer a year and more than 250 deaths because of these tests. There are 31 possible cancers linked with nuclear matter and some can take 20 to 30 years to develop. This is why they are showing up now. Research in Japan even suggests that some cancers can be transmitted genetically.

en African-American women who develop breast cancer are more likely to die from the disease than White women of the same age. Survival rates are worse among African-Americans for colon, prostate and ovarian cancers as well.

en The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

en About 15 per cent of lung cancers occur in lifetime never smokers, and besides exposures to second-hand smoke, other risk factors for these cancers are yet to be determined.

en I think colorectal cancer is underestimated in women because of the heightened awareness of lung and breast cancers. Women are more educated on breast cancer awareness and the need for regular gynecological exams. This is most likely secondary to the lack of education women receive on colorectal cancer.
