Last year we were still trying to make baby steps. We didn't know if we could compete and have a chance. Now we believe when we step on the court we have a chance. We need to get to the point where we can have four good quarters and not have those lapses that cost us games.

We just can't find the way to close out games in the final two minutes. Our effort was there again in the entire game, but our mental lapses on both ends of the floor cost us a good chance at a victory.

For me it wasn't a surprise. I knew I might not have a chance. Everybody was a step ahead. Well, not one, several steps ahead. This was what could have happened. I'll keep going forward and try to make the team later in the season. ... One of the toughest things was not being able to compete. For now I feel good physically. Right now, it's not about winning 50 games, 60 games, whatever. Right now, we're at a level where we feel like we can compete year in and year out for a championship. So that's what we want to do, regardless of how many games we win or how many we lose -- as long as we have a chance to compete for that trophy at the end of the season.

Our defense was OK, but OK isn't good enough for the NHL, and OK doesn't get you to the playoffs. So it's probably a classic case of possibly taking a step back to take a couple of steps forward. I think if we can just get this younger group the chance to gain some experience, in time they could actually be better than the veteran crew that we had last year. It's a risk, it's definitely a gamble, but we've cleared the deck to get these younger guys a chance.

Our reputation nationally is very good right now. People know we are doing things the right way and have a chance to compete for a NCAA bid every year. We need to create some energy and win our share of early season games. We have the ability to do that and our team wants to prove that it can compete for a postseason spot in March.

We had a lot of adversity this year. We met a lot of challenges this year, but we didn't meet this final one. We're very proud of the fact we've won 40 games in two years. We just skipped a lot of steps. We went from Step 1 to Step 10. Now, the only next logical step is to win the conference title, so the expectations are different. Everything was in place, and then the injuries came along.

They (doctors) warned us at the very beginning that there would be a lot of baby steps throughout the whole process. In essence, she has taken a lot of baby steps that, when you look at the whole picture, it has added up to huge steps. She has come so much further along than anyone hoped she would be at this point.

We don't have a good chance (to make the playoffs), it's a bad chance. But we have a chance, which is good. We have to win a lot of games, but we still feel like we can do it.

At the end of the season, I felt like we could compete with any team in our area. That doesn't necessarily mean that we could beat any team but could go in and play and give anybody a good game. Early on, we didn't do the things it took to finish games. We first had to teach the girls how to compete. Once we learned how to compete, then we had to learn how to win. By the end of the season we learned how to finish games. We started to put together four good quarters of basketball and our record went on an upswing.

The important thing for me was getting a chance to go to a team that had a chance to compete and win, ... Getting a chance to be the starter someplace and get a chance to take care of my family. So I was able to do all three of those things and come home.

The biggest, most glaring thing that we thought we could teach was getting off to a good start. We didn't in those two games, and it obviously cost us. We have to do that to give us a chance to win.

We figure 7 p.m., people can get there of all ages, they get to the Kohl Center, they see us play some games and have some fun, ... When most people see us only during a game, where it's more intense, and they get a chance to see everybody, plus we get some students out there. They shoot half-court shots, three-point shots, free throws, a chance to win some contests.
