We let them get out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. This was certainly not one of our best defensive games, but this was another very good team. The key thing is to work toward getting better and for the coaches to take these lessons and make changes which will help us be a better team.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.

The players and coaches have to take more responsibility to turn this thing around. We've got four games under our belts and that should be enough to know what we have, what we can and can't do, and to work on those things that will make us a better football team,

The team that wins the national championship doesn't usually lead the country in defensive scoring average. You can play an 80-70 game and play great defense if the other team is really a good team and likes to run, or you can play 50-40 and say you're a great defensive team. That never bothered me. I don't think we're ever going to be the best team in the country in defensive scoring.

We wanted to focus on the defensive end of the floor. When you hold a team to 49 points, that's always pretty good. The thing we really talked about at halftime was even though we were up 12, in past games, the 12 went to 10 and 8, and we let those teams hang around. We wanted to push that 12-point lead to 15 and 18, and concentrate on attacking.

Before big games, I'd call him to talk about the other team. He had to lead the team and sometimes, players listen to their peers a lot more then their coaches. He became our glue. The bigger the game, the more we depended on Perry.

His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness.

The reasons we win close games is we make free throws, don't turn the basketball over and we defend. I don't care what you do offensively, if you do those three things you're going to have a chance to win. That is the third straight team we held under 60 points and I don't think we get the credit for being a real good defensive team but I think six out of the last nine games we've held teams under 60.

You can't just run plays against a good defensive team. You've got to make them. We let one (bad) play lead to another and another and another ... until it just got completely away from us.

They're a good team, and no good team is ever going to just roll over. We've been fighting through this through the early season that we'd get two games up and we don't play with the same intensity, and that's the thing we've got to work with our guys on.

We don't have many whiskey drinkers on our team. We've got good guys. Our defensive scheme has to be team oriented. ... That's a work in progress with a team like this that's also very young.

These games are good for us because we don't have the defensive team I want out there for conference. We are trying to work out our lineup defensively to get us ready.

In the post they're a lot like Columbia. They just rebounded real hard (against Brookhaven) and were patient. They worked well as a team. We're mainly a defensive team. And it's more of a team thing — it's a friendship thing. I think that's why our team does so well.

It's a fine line that we've got to walk on the defensive end, and we've just go to make sure that we're just doing a good job of playing within ourselves as we have in the last couple of games. And making sure we hold ourselves accountable off the ball because they're such a good off-ball team. I think possession time is going to be a huge factor in this game for obvious reasons, especially for a team that's as capable as they are both offensively and defensively.

We had a really good first quarter and when you get a big lead like we did so early in the game, it's harder to protect it. You know a team as good as Hinsdale South is going to make a run.

We have good kids who work hard. We'll be a better team because of the lessons we learned. We're not a bad football team, we're just not a good football team yet.
