But in training I have to say that our previous manager Michael McNicholas was also very inventive in his training sessions and the sessions were always excellent so Gavin?s professional input is not new to us.

en He hasn't started working out hard yet. I don't know enough about his stroke. He missed a lot of playing time in spring training, so I don't know how quick (his return) can be.

en This year, coming back in great shape from the knee injury (at the end of 2004) and the competition he faced in training camp (from Ben Olson) has put him over the top. He's playing now at a level he visualized himself playing at over the summer.

But things are better -- the playing fields, the complexes. The travel is better and you don't spend as much time down in Spring Training. You now play teams that are not too far away from your city. It's all for the best.

en It's not like old days when spring training was considered an opportunity to get back into playing shape. These guys are in peak condition all year round.

en The process for our evaluation has been seven months and 160 training sessions and 20-some-odd games.... Our process sifted out that next level, the Olympic level. en Marcel needs maybe two or three training sessions to be operational for 90 minutes, but he has not abandoned the idea of playing (in the competition).

en I had a bad reaction to my medication, ... and they took me off it and gave me some pills that did the same thing. I lost a lot of weight and I've been putting that back on and trying to get back into shape. I didn't want to eat, because the antibiotic kills everything in your body and the enzymes in your stomach. I've been off it for a month now and I'm starting to feel normal again. They said it would take anywhere from four to six weeks to get my body back to normal.

en My heart is there, and they know I was trying to get there, but I just can't. At this point I haven't thrown to a batter yet. It's really difficult. I haven't even thrown a breaking ball here. I'm still wondering about my toe. It's really difficult. There's no time. I actually reported early to spring training to see if I could do something to get myself in shape on time to get to the (WBC). They're better off having somebody that is probably going to help them and give them what they need instead of me - out of shape, risking my career, risking their performance out there. It's going to be a tough competition. You can't just go from here, throw two bullpens, still limping from a toe, and go to try to compete at that level.
